Results Overview

Since its founding in 1972, Operation Lifesaver has been dedicated to ending tragic collisions, fatalities and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and on railroad rights of way. As an international, non-profit education and awareness program, Operation Lifesaver works to make communities safer.

U.S. government statistics show that vehicle-train collisions at highway-rail intersections have been cut in half over the past 20 years, while pedestrian rail trespass deaths have fluctuated. This section of our website looks at the results of OLI's safety education efforts throughout the United States, including:

  • Information on the number of safety presentations that Operation Lifesaver representatives have given in recent years, broken out by type of audience;
  • Statistics on specialty training of safety partners, including school bus drivers, law enforcement officers, professional truck drivers, and emergency response personnel;
  • Data estimating how many people were reached with Operation Lifesaver's safety messages through exhibits and information distributed at events such as local and state fairs, trade shows, community safety blitzes and other venues.
